Sir John Gordon the 2nd Laird of Park and Glenbucket was born more than 400 years ago. He became Laird of his lands and estates aged just 19, following the death of his father.

He was married twice and is known to have had Seven children, two of which my family descend from. He is my 10th great-grandfather twice over. and shares DNA with both my mother and aunt.

Sir John Gordon was born in the year 1610, he was the eldest son of Sir Adam Gordon 1st Laird of Park (1583 – 1629) and Lady Christian Gordon of Gight (1589 – before 1619). Both of his parents died at a relatively young age, John was just 9 years or younger when his mother died.

Castles of Sir John Gordon

Two Castles are known to have been owned by the family, Castle of Park and Glenbuchat Castle.

Glenbuchat Castle

Glenbuchat Castle is located on a bluff above the River Don. It was built-in 1590 for John Gordon of Cairnbarrow and his wife Helen on the occasion of their wedding. This is recorded in the stone above the entrance together with the motto “nothing on earth remains bot faime”, or “nothing lasts without good repute”.

Glenbuchat (pronounced ‘Glenbucket’) Castle is a roofless but otherwise complete late 16th-century Z-plan tower house of three storeys and a garret. It consists of a main block, with large square towers at diagonally opposite corners. In the two re-entrant angles, corbelled out above first-floor level, are large stair-turrets. Round and square bartizans crown the corners of the tower. The hall, on the first floor, has large windows, and the walls are pierced by shot-holes. The castle is dated 1590, and had a courtyard.

The entrance is in one of the square towers from the courtyard. The basement is vaulted, and contained a kitchen, with a large fireplace, and a wine-cellar, with a small stair to the hall above. A wide stair leads to the hall, which has been subdivided at some time. The private chambers of the upper floors were reached by the two turret stairs.

Following the bankruptcy of John Abernethy, 8th Lord Saltoun of Abernethy, in 1605 the castle was sold to Sir Adam Gordon, son of John Gordon of Cairnborrow and Edenglassie. The elder Gordon sold his lands of Benum in order to buy Saltoun estates for his two eldest sons, William receiving the lands of Rothiemay and Adam receiving those of Park. The Castle of Park would remain in the Gordon family for almost 400 years.

Many of my ancestors were born and lived here, it’s a beautiful example of a Romantic Scottish Castle.
