Sir Ralph “Knight” ‘of Chillingham’ GREY (1529 – 1566) – My 13th great grandfather – Rosie May JANES (1930 – 1996) – My grandmother

This family tree covers 13 generations of my family, starting with Sir Ralph “Knight” ‘of Chillingham’ GREY (1529 – 1566) who is my 13th great grandfather and ending with Rosie May JANES (1930 – 1996) – My grandmother.
The link into the family of Greys is illegitimate, my 2x great grandmother Mary Ann Mumford or Mountford was the illegitimate daughter of Charles Grey of Bocking and Lydia Mumford. Lydia is a woman of many secrets she never married Charles although four children are attributed to him (recently proven with the help of DNA and shared common ancestors at generation 6 and 8) I also share DNA matches with the Grey Family of Stapleford Tawney) Charles was also found guilty for the bastardy of an elder brother to Mary Ann, Charles Mumford. another child Eliza Mumford was born before Charles and may have a different father. No Barstardy papers exist for any of the other children, so I presume the remaining children belong to Grey. Charles and Lydia co-habited as an early form of common law husband and wife.

I believe Charles and Lydia may have stayed together after the court Bastardy order but Sadly that story takes an awful twist, because Charles and Lydia abandon at least two of their children to Bocking Workhouse, they separate and Charles Grey it would seem decides to take only one of the children, Charles Mumford into his sole care, the other children sadly are left to their fate. Maybe Grey excepts only the birth of Charles or the court order commits him to do so
Over the next decade we see Charles Grey move from one parish to the next, with Lydia following closely behind. She was following him round the county, until eventually he moves to another county all together and marries another woman. Lydia went onto have another five children again illegitimately by another man, ‘Samuel Dennis’ he too runs away to another county and married.
Lydia Mumford (later changed to Mountford) is a big mystery to me, a dark horse, a fallen woman and a sad story. She died on her own in Maldon Workhouse.
