Introduction

I decided to put these posts together to showcase my family’s journey through time, I will include as many sources as I can and in some cases explain how I found the records and what records are available. In most cases I will be looking at the facts rather than writing a detailed biography on each person.
A full list for each generation can be found on my new Generations page, and this page will be added to as I move through my family history.
My journey begins in Essex, England in 1930 with the birth of my Grandmother – Rosie May Janes and I begin by following her maternal line to the County of Dorset and then onto a new family line, different county’s and eventually different countries.
I hope to showcase how you can research your family history beyond the Parish Records and how a family line can alter as we move further back in time.

A Brief Biography

Emma GALE is the daughter of Richard GALE (1797 – 1844) and Jane BEST (1792 – 1870) [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11]. She was born Abt. August 1829 in Powerstock, Dorset, England [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8] and was one of nine children. Her father worked as both a carter (transporting goods) and a general labourer. Both of her parents were illiterate and the family by all means was probably very poor.

At the time of Emma’s birth, Powerstock was known as Poorstock, but this was changed in 1857 with the arrival of the Bridport Railway which ran through the village, the name was formally changed to avoid connotations of ‘poor (rolling) stock’. However another source states the name existed in its current form as early as 1787.

The village is also well connected to my family history and many of my ancestors were born and died here as far back as the 1500’s and possibly much further. My family history and connection with Powerstock includes a famous Dorset murder, which was never proven, this story can be found here.

At the time of Emma’s birth King George IV was on throne, followed by William IV a year later and then finally Queen Victoria in 1837. So she lived through two great periods in British history, the final years of the ‘Georgian Period’, and then the ‘Victorian Period’.

Emma was Baptized on 28 September 1829 in St Mary the Virgin, Powerstock, Dorset, England [ 2, 10].

By 1838 the family had moved to Compton Valence, Dorset which was little over six miles away and here Richard and Jane Gale (parents of Emma) had their last child, Jane Gale (1838 – 1872). I would presume that the reason they moved was to secure work. In 1841 Richard Gale was employed as an Agricultural Labour. There are no addresses listed on this census return, but what it does tell me is that the entire family from the eldest to the youngest (with exception of the toddler) was employed on the farm. The family must have worked very hard to make things meet and to put food on their table and Richard must have been a very hard worker and often must have placed himself in some very unsafe conditions because on the 7th July 1844 he died from a Rupture of the Stomach. Usually this is caused by a blunt trauma to the stomach, or even a knife wound (or other sharp object). To me, this sounds like a work based injury and a tragic accident. (No other information is provided on the Death Certificate).

By 1851, the family was still striving to make a living and everyone was still hard at work; Emma was still listed as an Agricultural Labourer, and the family was living next door a William Diskett (1816 – 1897) and family, he was brother to Emma’s future husband Joseph Diskett (1828 – 1893). It’s clear that this is where and how they met and I would guess the two families had become close friends and supported each other through hard times.

Joseph Diskett and Emma Gale married on the 28th September 1852 in St Thomas a Beckett, Compton Valence, Dorset. They went on to have eight children, the first in 1853, Alfred Diskett (1853 – 1893) and the last in 1866, Charlotte Anna Diskett (1866 – 1935).

All of their children were schooled and an education provided a privilege they never received themselves.

Tragedy struck the family on the 10th March 1871, Emma Diskett (Nee; Gale), died from Pulmonary Consumption (Tuberculosis), She was buried seven days later on the 17th of March 1871 in St Thomas a Beckett, Compton Valence, Dorset, she was 41 years old.
