John ‘of Melsham’ MAYE . Was born about 1430 in Melksham, Wiltshire, England . He was the only recorded son of Jenkyn Maye (1390 – after 1430) and Elizabeth Spencer (1389 – after 1430). Very little is known about John Maye and even his date of birth is estimated, the only information we have is an old pedigree recorded in the visitations of the county of Somerset, in the years 1531 and 1573.
His father was a clothier by trade and originated from Chippenham, Wiltshire an area well known for this trade and his mother Elizabeth Spencer or Despencer, was Heiress to a very wealthy estate, but sadly both of her parents died before she married and most of the lands and wealth were lost through family feuds. It’s very likely that Elizabeth married beneath herself or possibly even for love rather than for family alliances as was usual during this period.
The Despencer’s held land in Wiltshire and although I don’t have any documents it’s entirely possible that Melksham, Wiltshire was one of the estates that Elizabeth managed to hold onto.
John Maye lived through a time of Civil War, a period in English History known as the Wars of the Roses, both Edward IV and Henry VI was Kings of England.
John ‘of Melsham’ Maye had one son (his wife is unknown)
i. Robert MAYE-1 . He was born Abt. 1470 in Charterhouse, Somerset, England. Mayo Coat of Arms was Sable, a Chevron or between three roses argent, a chief of the second . Maye of Charterhouse Pedigree in Somerset, England .
