Short Biography

Robert MAYE is the son of John ‘of Melsham’ MAYE [1]. He was born about 1470 in
Charterhouse, Somerset, England. Little is known about these next two generations, except for the fact they originated from Chippenham, Wiltshire and were Clothier’s by trade. Chippenham was an affluent area of England that specialized in this trade and many families became very wealthy as a result.
The most famous Clothier’s of Chippenham were the Goldney family, who eventually settled in Bristol, Gloucestershire, below is a link to the history of parliament online regarding Henry Goldney (1517 – 1573)

The Goldney family is also famous for their link with the real Robinson Crusoe, ‘Alexander Selkirk‘ one of their Bristol ships found him marooned on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean. I have no evidence to suggest that the Maye family were related to the Goldney’s of Chippenham, but they certainly would have known each other.

Robert Maye married a native resident of Chippenham, Alice Baker in about 1500, I know nothing about the Baker family and no records seem to exist.

Robert and Alice had two children, and Robert died sometime after 1512 in Charterhouse, Somerset.
