The Maye family arrived in Charterhouse shortly before 1470 and quickly established themselves as one of the elite family’s in that area. They took control of the lead and Iron mines and supported Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries. In 1544 the manor of Charterhouse was granted by the king to The Maye Family, this grant would have given them full advowson of the parish church and the right of law and the keeping of peace would also have been in their hands.
Between 1544 – 1551, Robert Maye was a member of the Chancery Court and some of the cases he would have dealt with would have included Inheritance and Wills, Land, Debts, Marriage Settlements, Apprenticeships, Trade and so on. [5, 6].
