Generation Seven – Henry Mintern

47 Generations of Family History
Generation Seven
Henry Mintern
(1747 – 1812)

Introduction

I decided to put these posts together to showcase my family’s journey through time, I will include as many sources as I can and in some cases explain how I found the records and what records are available. In most cases I will be looking at the facts rather than writing a detailed biography on each person.
A full list for each generation can be found on my new Generations page, and this page will be added too as I move through my family history.
My journey begins in Essex, England in 1930 with the birth of my Grandmother – Rosie May Janes and I begin by following her maternal line to the County of Dorset and then onto a new family line, different county’s and eventually different countries.
I hope to showcase how you can research your family history beyond the Parish Records and how a family line can alter as we move further back in time.

Relationship to me: 6 x Great Grandfather.

Henry MINTERN was the only known child of Samuel ‘the younger of Hooke’ MINTERN (1713 – ) and Betty WILLIAMS (1720 – ), [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. They married in Rampisham, Dorset on the 23rd April 1740.
Henry was born between 1737 and 1740. [6] The reason I have these two dates is because his monumental inscription tells us from the age he died that he was born in 1737 and his baptism took place on 27 June 1740 in St Giles, Hooke, Dorset, England [7]. It is possible that his monumental inscription is incorrect, if he was born in 1737, then he was three years old when baptized and would have been illegitimate.

Henry’s baptism took place in the 13th year of King George ii, he lived throughout the Georgian period and It was a time of immense social change in Britain, with the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution which began the process of intensifying class divisions, and the emergence of rival political parties like the Whigs and Tories.

In rural areas the Agricultural Revolution saw huge changes to the movement of people and the decline of small communities, the growth of the cities and the beginnings of an integrated transportation system but, nevertheless, as rural towns and villages declined and work became scarce there was a huge increase in emigration to Canada, the North American colonies (which became the United States during the period) and other parts of the British Empire.

Baptism of Henry Mintern – 27th June 1740 – St Giles, Hooke, Dorset – Bishop’s Transcripts.

Henry Mintern married shortly before 1765 to a Mary (1746 – 1831), their marriage entry no longer exists, but we know they were married shortly before this date because their eldest child Betty Mintern was born about 1765.

At this point in family research we have no census records available and our main sources of information are found in the Parish records, Probate records, Land records. I have used all three in the research of Henry Mintern. Between 1781 – 1812 he appears in the Dorset, England, Land Tax Returns. He is listed as the Proprietor in all these records and over the years had a few tenants; Morgan Chilcott, Theo Bartlett, and then finally in 1799, his son Henry Mintern.[4]. It’s interesting that his son Henry took over the tenancy of this property because he wasn’t the eldest son, his brother Samuel was the eldest. This seems to have caused a lot of conflict in the family, because after his father’s death in 1812, Henry (although he inherited a small amount of money) is disowned by his family and within one year he is arrested and charged with vagrancy.

Henry and Mary Mintern had nine children between the dates 1767 – 1789

Henry Mintern is recorded as a farmer in his will dated 27th June 1812, the property he owned was Hooke Manor Farm.

Henry Mintern died less then a month of writing his will, so he knew his death was near, he died on the 16th July 1812 and was buried two days later on the 18th July.

He left a very small amount of money to his son-in-law, Robert Best (my 5x great grandfather), his daughter Hannah died in 1806 so her Widower inherited – ‘First I and bequeth unto my son-in-law Robert Best, the sum of one shilling’
