Introduction

I decided to put these posts together to showcase my family’s journey through time, I will include as many sources as I can and in some cases explain how I found the records and what records are available. In most cases I will be looking at the facts rather than writing a detailed biography on each person.
A full list for each generation can be found on my new Generations page, and this page will be added to as I move through my family history.
My journey begins in Essex, England in 1930 with the birth of my Grandmother – Rosie May Janes and I begin by following her maternal line to the County of Dorset and then onto a new family line, different county’s and eventually different countries.
I hope to showcase how you can research your family history beyond the Parish Records and how a family line can alter as we move further back in time.

A Brief Biography

Charlotte Anna DISKETT is the daughter of Joseph DISKETT (1828 – 1893) and Emma GALE (1829 – 1871) [1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]. She was born on the 19 July 1866 in Compton Valence, Dorset, England, and was the youngest of eight children. Her father worked as an agricultural labourer. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11]. Charlotte was baptized on 09 September 1866 in St Thomas a Beckett, Compton Valence, Dorset, England. [1, 1, 1, 2, 3]. Like all of her siblings she received an education and was listed as being schooled in 1871.

Sadly Charlotte’s mother Emma died on the 10th March 1871 just a few months before her fifth birthday, leaving her father Joseph to bring up eight children possibly with the help of the elder children. He never re-married and continued to work to support his family.

Only one of Charlotte’s siblings died in childhood, Emma Louisa Diskett the second youngest and two years older than Charlotte, she was twelve years old. I can image that Emma and Charlotte were very close and her death must have fell hard on her.

The first full address listed for the family is in 1881, Forston Farm, Charminster, Dorset, England, it was a large farm that housed sixteen families, a total of 79 people, men, women and children. In 1889, Charlotte had moved to the nearby town of Dorchester, Dorset and was employed as a Domestic servant; it was here she met her future husband a Private in the 2nd Dorset Regiment, Charles Barritt. He was five years older, born in 1861 and was a native of Colchester, Essex. Their first child, Thomas Joseph Diskett was born illegitimately in May 1887, West Fordington, Dorset. A few years later as Charles came to the end of his service, he married Charlotte. Their marriage took place on the 9th March 1889 at The Register Office, Dorchester, Dorset.

By the end of the year Charles, Charlotte and their three-year old son moved 200 miles away to Colchester, Essex, I have no idea how Charlotte felt about moving so far away from home but it must have been a big decision.

Their first known address in Colchester is recorded on the birth certificate of their daughter Hannah’s who was born on the 16th October 1890 at Mill Yard, St James, Colchester and in 1891 the family are recorded as living at 12 Mill Jubart Street. These addresses no longer exist in Colchester.

Over the next five years two more children were born Florence May in 1895 and Ernest Charles in 1896, there is also evidence of eight more children who died in infancy (as recorded on the 1911 census), I haven’t researched these children and so have no further information.

In total nine children died in childhood. Because on the 12th September 1900 at the Essex and Colchester Hospital The eldest child, Thomas Joseph Diskett died from empyema of which he suffered for twenty days. I can only image that the family must have been very poor and probably lived in some dreadful accommodation, full of dampness and mould. Charles Barritt (head of the family) was employed as a Coal Yard Labourer and so the pay would have been very low and probably reflected the pay that the actual Coal miners received. So very little.

Empyema is a collection of pus (dead cells and infected fluid) inside a body cavity. Usually, this term refers to pus inside your pleural cavity, or “pleural space.” The pleural cavity is the thin space between the surface of your lungs and the inner lining of your chest wall.
A cavity is a hollow space. Your lungs sit inside your chest cavity, just as your brain rests inside your skull cavity. Any fluid inside the chest cavity decreases the amount of space that your lungs have to expand. In order to fill with air when you breathe in, your lungs must be able to fully expand. When you breathe, your lungs should expand smoothly and painlessly within the pleural cavity inside your chest. When your lungs can’t expand properly, you have trouble getting the oxygen you need. This causes you to become short of breath and it may even hurt for you to breathe.

By 1901 the family had moved again and were now living at 2 School Yard, East Street, Colchester, and Charles had taken up service in the army again and would have been based in Colchester, Army Barracks with the Essex Regiment. Was this his last attempt to try to improve the lives of his family, it probably was, but sadly on the 8th March 1902 whilst at home Charles Barritt died from Influenza (7 days) and Pneumonia, he was 41 years old.

Charlotte is recorded as the Death Informant on 10th March 1902 (Widow of deceased – Present at death (sourced from Charles Barritt, death certificate)).

By 1911 in Colchester, Essex, Charlotte is recorded as working as a Charwoman (Sourced from 1911 Census)) and her residence at the time was 53 Vineyard Street, Colchester, Essex [11].

In just over a year on the 26th October 1912, Charlotte re-married a man ten years her junior, Frederick Newman who had previously served in the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment, Like Charles Barritt, her late husband, Frederick too was posted in Colchester Barracks. (They may have known each other).

Shortly after their marriage, the family moved to Maldon, Essex which was Frederick’s home town.

On 19 April 1917 in The Parish Church, St Mary, Maldon, Essex, Charlotte witnessed the marriage of her daughter. ((Sourced from Ernest James Janes and Ann Maud Mabel Barritt, Marriage Certificate)).

Frederick and Charlotte Newman had no children and they both died in 1935, Frederick in the January quarter and Charlotte on the 23rd April 1935 at 32a Spital Road, Maldon, England. She died from double pneumonia and they were both buried next to each other at St Mary’s Church, Maldon, Essex. [10].

  1. Great research. I always find it so incredible, reading about how many children died in infancy or childhood. I don’t know how people coped with it.

    • I’m not sure how they coped either, It must have been a difficult life. There are no baptisms for these children, so the children must have died within the first few days / weeks at most. I have had a little look for Birth and Death records but Barritt is a common name in Colchester, Essex. I can only go by what Charlotte wrote on the 1911 census and she records the death of 9 children (which includes Thomas who died in 1900). I may attempt to order a few death certificates, but I won’t know if they are correct until they arrive. It’s always possible that no deaths were recorded and if they were so young, they may not have been named.

      • Yes, I have found many deaths recorded for children in my family, but I suspect there were even more. Whenever there are big age gaps, I have to think that there were some babies that did not survive. One time I had no idea until I found a headstone on FindAGrave with nine names on it. Then I found birth or death records for all nine children. Terrible.

      • Blimey, how sad. if that happened today I can’t imagine that anyone could cope with it. It would break even the hardest of people I’m sure. I have a lot of respect for our ancestors, their hardship made what we have today.
