Original Adelphoi Zangaki Photograph – c. 1880 – HMS Crocodile, Suez Canal

One of the most recent photographs I have bought from auction is this photograph dating from about 1880, it’s an Albumen photograph by Adelphoi Zangaki (the Zangaki Brothers) (active 1870s –1890s) who were two Greek photographers who specialized in historic or ancient Egyptian scenes, producing prints for the tourist trade.

This image photographed from the bank of the Suez Canal depicts the Indian Troopship HMS Crocodile.

My 2x Great Grandfather Charles Barritt was on-board this ship in 1886 whilst travelling with his battalion from Bombay, Maharashtra, India to Arden (Yemen).

It’s probably one of my favorite bought photographs due to it’s subject matter.

please feel free to use this image.
