Trying to work out on a present day map where your ancestor fell in World War One is no easy task.
I know his last hours was spent filling a gap on Hill 37, which had opened up compromising the efforts of British Western Front.
the great war forum hold a few clues, passed on by members of which I am very greatful for:
cansas cross : on the road from Langemark to Zonnebeke on the junction with the road from Wieltje (ypres)to s’Graventafel (passendale ) (just left of fokker farm)
hill 35 : just under cansas cross ; : in the triangle : Gallipoli Farm r- Iberian Farm > Pommern castle
hill 37 : just under cansan cross, right of hill 35 : in triangle gallipoli farm > delva farm >dochy farm – source: the great war forum.
Here is a screen shot of Google maps, from what I can tell the area I have circled is Hill 37, where my great grand uncle John George Woods fell on the 26th April 1915, and where his body and the bodies of the 1st/6th Durham Light Infantry who fell on the same day still lay.
Have I found the correct spot?!
